GEM MOTORS DEVELOPED A NEW MOTOR, WHICH REPRESENTS AN IMPORTANT INNOVATION FOR LEV MARKET

11th November, 2022

Within the scope of the GEM E-drive project, GEM motors completed the development of the G3 motor with 15 kW nominal power, using the innovative in-wheel technology. This motor brings a considerable improvement and a greater appeal to urban users, compared to conventional internal combustion vehicles. The G3 motor has been integrated into a small urban vehicle, Fiat 500, and has been already successfully tested with 600 driven km.

With the integration of electrical drive into the wheel, GEM electric drive has made a step forward, compared to the other state-of-the-art electric drive solutions, such as Tesla Model S, Rimac Concept S etc., which use mechanical transfers of power, above all what regards complete electromagnetic, electric and mechanical integration.

Instead of the central electric drive or the in-wheel drive with an external controller there exists a simple GEM solution: a wholly integrated in-wheel electric drive with patented modular multiphase technology. This solution presents a new trend for compact electric drives, integrated near the wheel, which simplifies electrification of vehicles, reduces the number of parts, makes vehicles lighter and reduces the cost of production.

GEM motors continues its already completed study with higher powers of GEM integrated electric drives for light electric vehicles within the SME Phase 1 instrument. GEM motors’ fully integrated modular electric drive technology is patent protected in key markets.

The goal is to enter fast growing LEV market

The goal of GEM motors is to complete the development of motors in the power range of 7.5 to 15 kW and to enter the fast growing market of light electric vehicles (LEV), above all three- and four-wheelers. This market, which comprises vehicles in between electric bikes and electric cars, is predicted to generate sales of approximately 33 billion dollars in 2026 [1]. GEM motors’ technology improves effectiveness and user experience for millions of end users of electric vehicles and contributes significantly to European strategic goals in reducing carbon emissions. Commercialization of this project will be prepared internally and implemented in cooperation with customers, what will create new job openings within the company.
