GEM MOTORS FEATURED IN NEWSWEEK GLOBAL OBSERVER: POWERING THE FUTURE OF URBAN MOBILITY

9th Febaruary, 2026

GEM Motors has been featured in an exclusive interview in Newsweek Global Observer, highlighting the company as one of the key innovators shaping the future of urban transport.

The article presents the story of GEM Motors’ founder and CEO, Simon Mandelj, whose background in engineering and research laid the foundation for a company with global ambitions. After completing his PhD and working on electromagnetic field modeling, Mandelj identified the need to significantly improve existing electric motor technologies.

“The idea for GEM Motors emerged from a drive to improve existing electric motor technology,” explains Mandelj.

From Research to Global Innovation

Founded in 2010, GEM Motors developed its first prototype with early investor support and, in 2013, launched its first patented GEM in-wheel drive system, a fully integrated electric motor and controller embedded directly in the wheel. This breakthrough technology allows for a compact, plug-and-play solution, reducing system complexity while improving performance and efficiency.

Today, GEM Motors has grown into a globally recognized technology provider with 48 standard products, 22 global patents and prestigious international recognitions such as the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Award and the Red Dot Award for Product Design.

A Unique Technological Advantage

What truly differentiates GEM Motors from global competitors is its patented modular concept, integrating both the motor and controller inside the wheel.

“Our unique advantage is the integration of both: the motor and controller within the wheel itself, offering a plug-and-play solution that simplifies installation and maximizes space efficiency,” says Mandelj. “This often increases vehicle range by over 20% compared to competitors.”

This technology is particularly well-suited for light electric vehicles (LEVs), where space, weight, and efficiency are critical.

Shaping the Future of Urban Mobility

The Newsweek Global Observer interview also highlights key trends in global mobility. Urban transport is rapidly shifting towards shared, electrified, and lightweight vehicles, especially for short distances and last-mile delivery.

GEM Motors focuses on providing solutions for electric bikes and scooters, motorcycles and cargo vehicles, microcars, agricultural vehicles and small autonomous robots. These applications reflect a broader transition toward smarter, cleaner, and more efficient mobility systems in cities worldwide.

International Growth and Strategic Vision

Despite global trade uncertainties and challenges in certain markets, GEM Motors continues to expand internationally. While the U.S. market faces tariff-related barriers, the company’s strategic focus remains on Europe and fast-growing Asian markets, particularly India and China, where demand for electric mobility is accelerating.

“Flexibility and agility are our strength. Success in Asia requires local production partnerships, which we are actively pursuing,” Mandelj explains.

The company is also open to strategic investments to accelerate growth and enter new market niches.

Slovenia as an Innovation Hub

The interview places GEM Motors within the broader context of Slovenia’s innovation ecosystem. According to Mandelj, Slovenia’s strong technical education system, combined with a culture of creativity and problem-solving, makes it an ideal environment for advanced engineering companies.

“Slovenia is full of undiscovered ‘gems’, small innovative companies ready to scale globally but limited by local market size,” he notes.

GEM Motors stands as a prime example of how Slovenian technology can achieve global relevance in a highly competitive industry.

A Message to Investors and Partners

For international investors and partners, GEM Motors represents a future-ready company with proven technology, strong intellectual property, and a clear strategic roadmap.

“For investors seeking future-ready solutions in electric mobility, Slovenia and GEM Motors  represent unique opportunities for growth in a rapidly evolving industry,” Mandelj concludes.
